Thailand moves forward to clear China, reduce strict inspection of durian, push for smooth export

Thailand is accelerating the promotion of durian exports to China by negotiating with Chinese government representatives to request relaxation of residue testing measures, especially BY2, which currently involves random testing of 100% of products, and requesting an increase in testing equipment, tools, and the number of officers at border crossings to accommodate the increasing export volume during this year’s fruit season.

It also proposed a close exchange of information on the inspection situation of transport vehicles at border crossings to enable efficient transport management and reduce delays in product distribution.

In 2024, Thailand exported durian to China worth more than 3.7 billion US dollars or approximately 833,000 tons, accounting for 97.4% of Thailand’s total durian exports.

Improving the import procedures of Chinese customs

According to data from the China Trade Promotion Agency, Nanning Customs has opened a “special channel” for agricultural products from ASEAN, giving priority to fruits. It has also extended working hours, added more staff, implemented an appointment system, and accelerated the construction of a laboratory for testing BY2 substances, which is expected to be completed by May 2025. It also plans to increase the number of entry and exit lanes to three.

While Kunming Customs has increased the number of BY2 testing laboratories from 3 to 5 (currently 4 are in use), supporting the inspection of up to 400 samples of goods per day, and has a plan to expand the inbound and outbound traffic lanes from 2 to 12 by early 2026.

Chinese Market Strategy: Developing the “Thai Durian” Brand

For the marketing plan in China, Thailand will focus on building confidence in the quality of durian by highlighting its distinctive taste and differences from competitors, expanding the online market to new consumer groups through digital platforms, and promoting sales through international trade fairs in major cities in China.

Activities to promote Thai durian consumption in China also include organizing durian buffets, special menus in Thai SELECT restaurants, and “Durian Tour” activities to create hands-on experiences and stimulate widespread consumption.
